engine overheating 850

Well I am at the point of facing my fears I must have botch my first attempt at putting the headgasket in.
Here is what I have learned so far,if anyone else is having similar problems.
1. Engine is overheating
2. I am not loosing water to the engine.
3. Combustion gas are being compressed into the coolant system through the leaking head gasket. (I think)The reason being I think this is that I see a constant stream of bubbles comming into the coolant reservoir from the little thermostat by pass hose.
Further I think the gas is being trapped in the raditor vapor locking and preventing the water from ciculating through the raditor.

With the thermostat in or out the top hose gets hot but the lower stays cold, and soon as I pull loose the lower hose there is a big air release and then the coolant flows through and gushes out.
