remote key program mode?? 850 1996

Have been scouring the archives for info on programming a used remote key fob that i just got off of ebay. I believe it is the correct unit for my y/m/m -'96 855T, but I still need to confirm by checking the unit behind the glove box.
What's puzzling is that after I do the procedure to activate the car's program mode (off and on 5 times, leave on 5th time, etc.)the car isn't going into program mode. the red light on the dash does not start blinking at all. is there something i'm missing here, or is my 850 one of the ones that i have to take to the dealership to program? thanks,
