seafoam thing and engine compartment smoke 855T 130k miles 850 1994

after extensive reading at tbricks, i did the seafoam thing.
During the initial process, while 'injecting' the fluid, i had smoke ejecting from the side (firewall)of the engine. I found two references to this engine compartment smoke.
- exhaust manifold leak ?
and
- vaccum leak ?
as it was a one person operation, i was not able to view it more closely.

any ideas or comments on additional possibities for the source/problem ?

also, flushed the transmission and 12 qts. was NOT adequate.

thanks

jack
