Synthetic Oil Consensus? V70-XC70 2000

Is there a consensus among Volvo owners about what kind of oil to run? High mileage is such a badge of honor among Volvo owners that I felt it only makes sense to ask. Also, how do people feel about switching over to synthetic if the car has traditionally run with the natural stuff?
