850 Randomly idles high, coolant temp drops to zero 850 1995

My 95 T-5R occasionally will idle @ 3000 to 3500 rpm. I noticed today that the coolant temp dropped to 0 while this was occuring. This is the third time that this has happened.

The second time this happened the car would not start. It would turn over but never catch. Initially I thought the fuel pump had failed so to check I pulled the fuse for the pump. The car then started and ran for a few seconds until the fuel was exhausted. I noticed that the Idle air control valve would continue to hum even after the key was removed from the ignition. After about an hour and tapping on the valve the car started and then did the 3000 rpm idle for a few minutes. The problem went away for about two weeks until it came back again today.

I was guessing that the valve was bad but I'm wondering if the temp guage is somehow related. Last week I reset the Check Engine light and cleared a P0117 code for coolant temp circuit low.

Any ideas would be appreciated...
