Broke my rearview mirror clean off! 850

So this morning on my drive to work, I was noticing that my rearview mirror needed adjustment. It has always been really stiff, but this morning seemed exceptionally hard to adjust. Long story short, I pulled a bit too hard, and felt a metallic pop. Now the mirror is hanging from the roof console, and I have to take the thing apart to try to fix it.
Two questions: 1) how does one go about removing the plastic cover of the roof console without causing further damage (are there clips holding it place? Where are they located?) and 2) not having ever undertaken this surgery, what awaits me? Is it just a matter of rescrewing in the mirror stalk, or did I really break it?
Thanks in advance!
