Thermometer reading WAY too high

...for example, 136F on a fairly warm day. 70F at dawn on a coolish-morning about a minute after starting.

Any thoughts on what's causing the overly high misreadings? Haven't dug through my Chilton's to try to isolate the problem yet, but off the cuff, has anyone else seen this?

This is in our new (used) '99 C70 Convertible. The outside temperature guage in our '99 V70R AWD, on the other hand, seems to read pretty accurately.

Thanks in advance for any insights.
