Brake Problem 850 1997

Hi,
We have had a problem with our brakes for about 6 months now.

Initially on several occasions there was a grinding type sound when braking. I got this checked out thinking the pads were worn down but everything was OK.

Since then on 3 or 4 occasions there has been a total loss of braking which is then OK after reapplying the brakes.

The ABS light has been on but occasionally goes off usually for a couple of minutes.

I got this checked at the volvo place they cleaned a sensor or something and the light stayed out for a few days before coming on again.

Our odometer (not speedomoter) has also stop working recently.

Any ideas on the likely problems given these symptoms?
