Engine bucks/surges, check engine light flashes/stays on S40-V40 2000

This afternoon, my V40 with 91k miles started surging and bucking under hard acceleration (like when passing uphill) with the tranny in Sport mode. The Check Engine light flashed and went out, but the last time it happened, the light stayed on. There's no surging with the tranny in Economy mode, but I'm also not getting the full kickdown and revs that I get in Sport mode. Using only 91 octane gas from premium sources (Exxon, etc.) Any ideas?
