Help my mechanic (and me) 850 1997

My wife's 1997 850 GLT with 118,000 miles makes a loud screeching noise when cold for a minute or so. Fairly high pitched and RPM dependent - like perhaps a bearing or belt. Luckily goes away after warm. The mechanic took off the auxillary belt and it still did it so he concluded that it is either the water pump, turbo, or engine itself. It seems to be coming from right side of engine but hard to tell cause it is so loud. Sounds very damaging. He figures we wait until something goes completely to track it down. Any suggestions?
