serpentine belt tensioner won't budge 850 1995

Hi all, I searched and found a thread describing how to use three quarters and a vice grips to turn the tensioner to releive the serpentine belt. well it worked well and I was able to get alot of leverage, so much so I bent the three quarters. The tensioner did not even hint at budging and my question is, Is it supposed to be so tight or "highly wound" and if it isn't, could that be the cause of my main problem, the bearings in the idler. thank you for ANY thoughts.
