Air Conditioner Diagnosis 850 1997

My 1997 854 GLT is experiencing AC issues.
I have owned the car since new and last year was the first time I had to add freon, done by a local shop.
I added freon myself this time and the AC blew cold for about 3 days. It subsequently started cycling and I added freon again....lasted about 3 days.

A local Volvo indy tells me it is $75 to diagnose the problem (add freon and dye).

I called the Volvo dealer here in Austin, Tx (Beasley Volvo) and they say they charge $40 for a visual inspection (o-rings, etc). If no determination can be made visually , they will charge $250 to evacuate and recharge the system.

$250 to put freon in a system that I know leaks is ridiculous.

Does this sound like the evaporator? Any suggestions on how I can diagnose this myself?

Thanks!
