Sounds like a loose electrical contact somewhere...

I think that the most common cause may be the ignition switch.

You can simulate the problem (hopefully) by playing with the ignition switch while the engine is running and the car is parked. Just rotate the switch a little bit in both directions (not enough to turn it off, or engage the starter), then jiggle it up and down, in and out. If you can get it to shut off, that's your problem, and the electrical portion of the switch will have to be replaced.

Is there lots of "stuff" (keys, remote, nail clippers) hanging off your ignition key? That exacerbates the problem.

If that doesn't turn out to be the problem, you'll have to look further.
