rear main seal leak--how to tell? 850 1996

Hi All,

My knowledge of auto mechanics is pretty limited, but I thought I'd post here before plunking down big bucks to replace a rear main seal.

The car: 850 GLE (1996)

The problem: I have a slight oil leak down in the engine on the left-hand side (i.e., driver's side). There is no visible oil on the top of the engine when looking down from the hood, except that I saw some oil on the bell housing. How can I tell if a leak is due to the rear main seal? Are there any telltale signs? Other things to try replacing first?

Thanks!

Paul
