exhaust obstructions are funny things....and difficult to check for! on a p40 there is a removable plug in the fro nt pipe you unscrew and go for a drive (it loud!) if the porblem is better than suspect a blocked exhaust...

the better way to go it is to dril land tap a series of m5 holes down the exhaust pipe at intervals, then close them with m5 bolts, then screw a pipe to presure guage into each in turn and go for a drive and see if you have excesive back presure at points in the system....easy to do and very instructive!
