ABS or Brakes? V70-XC70 1998

Have the same situation with my '98 V70 GLT. If I am pressing the brake pedal when the ABS module "decides" to shut down I feel a wicked shudder through the pedal and hear a sick "grroonn" under the hood. Would have sent mine off to be repaired but I don't like ABS anyway.
