Actually I think that Scabooch is right that it is the motor itself. Our '94 850 had similar intermittant problems until we replaced the blower motor. $240 is a bit stiff...eeuroparts.com has them for much less, but then again you're in England right? This could be a DIY project and not so hard if you're willing to tackle it to save some $$. I believe there's a write-up on it over on Bay13 on the volvospeed.com website.
