I recently had this done on my 2001 S40 because it is listed as a maintenance item in my manual. It cost approximately $50 from my independent Volvo mechanic. I don't know how important it is, but since it was suggested, and only cost $50, I had it done. The interval in the manual is every 60,000 miles, so I figured it wasn't too cost prohibitive.
