'96 850 engine running rough when under load(i.e. going up a hill) 850 1996

My father's 850 is apparently running rough(and making some sort of "groaning" sound) when under load, though he stressed to me that it wasn't losing power, nor did this occur when on level ground. I was wondering if this could be a sensor issue, timing issue, fuel injection issue, or something completely different. Thank you! :)
