In our experience, Volvo uses great hoses.
Our 850s have 150, 120, and 100 thousand miles, and I look at the hoses regularly, but I am not worried about any of them. ALL our Volvos, except one, had more than 72,000 miles when we bought them.
In the 400,000 Volvo miles that we have driven, we have only replaced one top radiator hose on an "88 745 with 220,000 miles. That hose had a definate swelling and was soft, indicating that the cord inside the hose had broken.
I look at the hoses for signs of swelling, leakage, softness, cracking, or a change in external appearance.
Chech volvospeed for directions on transmission flushing and other maintenance/repair instructions.
