Hello Richard,

Our V-70 did the same thing, either last winter or the winter before. You're right, it is perplexing because sometimes the car starts fine then other times it starts, then immediately dies.

It has not done it since. Although I'm waiting for a recurrence. I did clean the electrical contacts of the MAF sensor. Also someone suggested that if this should happen again, the next time I try to start the car I should alternately turn the key to on but not crank the car and then return the key to off. Then try to start the car again. I'm not quite sure what this has done.

You may also try to do a search. I tried using Starts then Dies - didn't work, but the archives may contain some additional clues, including some info on the immobilizer business.
