I bought mine through the dealer, and the shift knob needs to be destroyed to get it off in order to get the shift boot off. Also, if someone has been tugging on the shift knob because they don't believe that you can't get the knob off, replacing the white plastic ring that retains the ball at the bottom of the shift lever might be a good idea, too.
Why design anything simple if you can make it complicated?
