Engine Sludge Buildup in S70 GLT S70

When I check the oil in my 1998 S70 GLT Turbo, I notice a yellow wax like substance on the bottom of the dip stick. Is there anything that can be done to reduce the sludge buildup short of tearing down the engine? The car has 180,000 miles on it and still runs well--going through only about 1/2 quart of oil between changes. Also, the dealer tells me the PVC system is plugged and needs to be repaired--about a $300 job. Is this a normal problem on this engine?
