If you don't want to use Victor, then at your own risk, try to fix it yourself.
I have not done this myself, but have read several posts in which regular folks have fix them themselves.
First, you'll need an electronics soldering kit, good magnifying lense and good lighting.
Remove the ABS unit and open its plastic case carefully. Take pictures if you have a digital camera. The problem of most units is broken soldering areas, specially in the area where the cable connector fits. Apparently the broken soldering is obvious to detect.
Try it, you have nothing to lose.
