how often to replace pollen filter 850 1996

In VA, I do mine twice a year which is probably overkill but it sure looks moldy and nasty. I saw a post on the BB that gave the Purilator air filter # that fits the holder (with minor trimming) and is waaaaaay cheaper that the $16. going price. On second thought, if I weren't so lazy I'd measure my old one and start opening Purilator boxes at Pep Boys.
