Engine cuts out when placed in drive. Please Help 850 1997

I know it should be on constantly while the car is running. It's when I turn on the ignition first, the light flashes for a split second and then goes out. When I start the car, it then comes back on and stays on. This phenomenon, combined with the fact that the engine runs and revs perfectly until it is put in drive, leads me to believe that the problem is "transmission electronics" related. I need to find out where? Thanks for the reply. Regards.
