Great story, thanks. You stuck it out longer than most would - maybe even a record of some kind. What to make of it - so many quality problems in so many companies - Mercedes for example. It seems that no one can make an automatic transmission anymore after a half a century of experience. Also note that the new Toyota Avalon is a huge, huge bomb - a very, very troubled car in lots of ways. Sorry I don't have a link but see recent article in Automotive News. By the way my stripped down stick shift S60s (2) are absolutely bulletproof - seem to be as reliable as anything Volvo ever made.
