I had the same thing happen in my '94 850 years ago. Turned out the mylar piece in the steering wheel (expands and contracts as the wheel turns) had broken. It is connected to the airbag in the steering wheel. If you check the codes as Klaus says and are able to turn the code off, no need to look further. Otherwise, you can disconnect the battery and check out the mylar strap in the steering wheel. Good luck.
