Which state are you dealing with here? VA by chance? Several years ago, we got a notice out of the blue from VADOTax that I had failed to file SIT for two years prior which was interesting as we file a joint return and they had my wife on record as filing that year. Go figure. Anyway, it took almost 6 months of frustration to settle it. They are, beyond doubt, the most stupid worthless bunch of bean counters on earth.

My wife was able to obtain transcripts of our FIT return for the year in question from the IRS which was also a hassle but the info was there. If you think this might help, I'll try to find out tonight how she did it. Good luck
