A/C repair - failed? 850 1994

My point is, the system was tested with a can of R134A from Pep Boys with the guage - the pressure indicated that the system was full of freon. The guy there felt that a pressure switch or clutch cycling switch was indicated.
I told this to the indie I brought my Volvo to.
He disagreed, told me there was no freon, hence the entire story I have explicity spelled out here.
I'm out $400, and now I'm possibly going to lose my A/C sooner than later - this indie, who is the shop owner, said to me "there is no problem with any switches or anything" after doing all the work.
After sitting in a 90+ degree waiting area of his shop for over an hour and then getting into my car in the baking sun, it was difficult to ascertain whether the A/C needed to "warm up" (again, I'm not a mechanic) so that it would be ice cold, or whether the car just needed to be driven - the air was cold, but not as cold as I'd remembered.
I'd called him about this when I'd returned home and he said it was because it was an old compressor and that there might be debris on the evaporator or something like that.
I trusted him when he said I had no freon and a charge was all I needed, and then agreed to the accumulator replacement when he said if it wasn't replaced all the freon would leak out as I just wanted my A/C fixed, and assumed he knew what the hell he was doing.
Also, what does this mean: "but it sounds like there was not a lot he could do about the situation that you have with your a/c."
The situation I have with my A/C is that it wasn't working, presented symptoms which I explained clearly, I paid to have it fixed, and it clearly isn't fixed. Period.
