Tape huh? Your on the right track but what you want to do is cut the sheath right smack in the middle, pull the cable out from one end or the other, cut about 3/8" off of the sheath, and then reassemble the whole deal with a piece of fuel hose in the middle with hose clamps on either end to keep the now shortened cable sheath together. This is the condensed version but that is the gist of what you want to do. You will need to run the motor back and forth some to time it all up but it is not too bad of a deal. I just bought a 960 with the same issue in the seat track cables, I get to pull that pig of a seat out and do the same deal and because it is my car nobody is going to pay me for it, sucks!
Let me know if you need a little more detail and I will tell you what I can.
Good Luck,
Mark
