Sounds like freezing and thawing to me. It freezes so there's an obstruction and no air gets in. the heat of your reving engine thaws it enough to get it running again. Why this happens, I'm not sure. Others will chime in I'm sure. Don't think you're going to have to purge the system to fix it.
