850 transmission clunking upshift, slips before engaging on startup 850

1995 850, 170,000 miles. Bought car at about 90,000 miles, shortly after noticed it occasionally has a rough upshift when slowing a stop. The 3 to 2 shift sometimes clunks, with 2 to 1 being particularly rough.

Flushed with normal fluid to get it cleaned out, then with Mobil 1 ATF. Worked much better, but the clunk upshift came back in about 30,000 miles. Flushed again, lasted 30K, came back, this time with a new symptom: sometimes from a stop the engine will rev up to around 1500 RPM before engaging. Can't say for sure if the car is getting no forward push or a much-reduced push while it is "slipping", but it is definitely not "fully engaged".

Changed fluid again. It seemed fairly dark, darker than expected for Mobil-1 with 20K miles. I don't do this all the time, so maybe I was looking for trouble... I kind of expected almost-new Mobil-1 to come out pinky-clear. Anyway, changing fluid helped but did not eliminate the clunking; slipping might be better but is definitely not gone.

Other than changing the fluid is there anything I can do to fix this, or at least keep it from getting worse? It seems the tranny is burning up fluid, so maybe it is running hot? Not a good sign to be sure.

Any suggestions appreciated. Really like the car, would like to keep it rolling. Hate to think the tranny is headed out...
