Broken spring is very rare. Sure it wasn't a "spring seat?" Whichever, You'll need to change the other side at the same time. You can go after market and beat the dealer price and do a "mod" at the same time if you want. look at www.fcpgroton.com as well as www.ipdusa.com (a bit more expensive, and shox.com . H&R springs are my personal favorite, but I don't drive an XC, so not sure what is best for you. You might start another thread with "What Springs would you put on an XC" as topic and see what you get.
Also while changing the springs (really not that difficult...a couple of hours, tops) take a look at all of your other suspension parts. Would be a good time to replace what's worn. You may even be in need for new struts...and this might have been why one of your springs broke.
