I have had mine out and dissected! I also foud a 1993 in a pick and pull with the same problem, darn - same design.
You will need to remove the rear hatch panel to get to the metal rod so you can push it down and unlock the catch. But, you cannot get to that until you take out the two torx screws holding down the loop on the frame, so you can open the hatch. Removing the screws is much easier than cutting the steel loop. The screws are T40.
