You did everything right. You will have to use the phone and call FCP Groton or AutohouseAZ.com to get a replacement. The small bearings must have worn. They only run at one speed.
There is another one on the passenger side. I suggest removing and cleaning it also while your memory is fresh. These little things are not cheap.
