It is indeed the alarm horn which works very well. I never had a reason to "sound the alarm" with the hood open before so I didn't assume it was what it obviously looked like. I was wondering if it was an ambient air pressure sensor or such. The alarm on my S40 is not in the same location but it is also not a horn sound. More of two note electronic chime.

The alarm is plenty loud, just didn't expect it right there.
