Before you drive backwards to your mechanic, check the backup lights. If they are not on when the shifter is in R, it is probably the PNP.
You could also check the engine codes and see what codes there are for the tranny (A1).
When the arrow is flashing, it means that you will probably be in "limp home" mode, or 3rd gear. Try putting the car in L and see if you can change the gears manually, instead of calling a tow truck.
