Gear position sensor is also known as the PNP. Check your back up lights, if they don't come on in reverse, that's it. By all means, row the shifter with the engine off and the key to on about 20 times to delay the inevitable replacement. The PNP is accessed by removing the air cleaner box, not a too terrible job.
