How does the serpentine belt look? It could be failing, although since the sound stops without the air conditioning on, it's unlikely. Same holds true for the belt tensioner, if the sound goes away with no AC, it's not likely.Another possibility is the alternator has a failing bearing, and the additional load of the A/C makes it more obvious.

What is most likely is that either a mounting bracket for the compressor is loose or broken, or a bearing inside the compressor is failing.
