Question about a burning smell .... S60

Well, there was no smell going down the mountain (lower gears and moderate revs, but the engine wasn't loaded), so I guess it was just heat from the first time the engine really worked hard. I'm thinking some anticorrosion film on engine parts were finally vaporized. The car ran fine the remainder of the week I was there, and ever since (daughter reports).
