01 V70 T5 ABS STC Warning service required along with the lights

Klaus,

Well the problem is solved. Not as expected, but solved. I'll write it all so other members my gain from my experience.

1) Pulled the intake to the air-box and checked the engine bay. No oil at all. Apparently when the hose slipped, it basically dumped the oil down to the air shield (which I did clean up easily).
2) Pulled the sensors on all 4 wheels. Only one on the front passenger showed any dirt build up, but did clean them all and re-installed. Did a test ride, but same problem.
3) Started looking at the fuses again since all the connectors looked good. Pulled them all and even checked them with an ohmmeter. What I had not noticed before was there are 3 fuses that associate with the ABS. When Victor had given me his instructions, he requested I pull fuse 14 (under the hood) before doing the work, which I did. Afterwards during the initial problem analysis, I pulled just about every fuse that might be associated with the computer of the ABS. Now in going back this morning, I noted a fuse number 19 (also under the hood) associated with the ABS that was not present. I started thinking if perhaps I might have put the fuse back into the wrong position when I was checking earlier, and apparently I did. Because as soon as this fuse was present, all worked as supposed to. I pulled it again and it failed as it had always done. So what happened here? Why did the ABS fail, but Victor showed good? I'm guessing it was on the verge (intermittent) and Victor fixed the control, and perhaps I screwed up the fuses, it's my best explanation (I feel soooooo dumb as I consider myself a pretty good mechanic).

By the way, for those with a 2001 V70, getting to the wheel sensors is really easy. Just pull the wheel, and the screw holding in the sensor. No need to pull the rotor as I had initially guessed. Very straight forward. The idea of washing with high pressure would not have worked.

Klaus, do you know the recommended thickness to replace the brake pads? My fronts are at 5mm. My last check at 60K showed 7mm per the tech, and I'm now at 70.4K. I'm thinking next casual weekend turn the rotors and replace the pads. I noted that Volvo is now using a very soft steel rotor as it had a significant lip unlike the ware pattern on my previous Volvos.

Hope you are having a great weekend, mine was (by getting this problem behind me). Thanks Klaus and the BRICKBOARD!!!!

Jerry
