Cargo Area Light not Working V70-XC70 1998

If there is no current in the wire, 2 possibilities. A broken wire in the tailgate hinge, or the microswitch failed in the lock. To test the micro switch, turn the engine on and raise the liftgate. If the light at the instrument panel indicating lift gate open, switch is good.
It could also be a poor ground that came loose. Check the wire for current first.
