Place a trip computer in car without one? S70 1998

I asked my dealer about this when I first got my S70. I was told that you need a switch on your dashboard to control the computer(dealer item). Wiring should already exist; just plug the switch in. Then you will need some kind of a firmware upgrade which would cost about $300 or so. I elected to do without the trip computer.
