Here's one other option for the near term. I recently found a purpose-built clamp for use on the tailgate struts. It showed up at Princess Auto (basically a Canadian company, but accessible online - www.princessauto.com)and the value of this item is that if you're working in the storage area, there's no chance of dislodging that 8ft 2x4 and having the gate come down on your head.
