A/C compressor not running 850 1997

Running it low on refrigerant should not damage it, it is designed with that in mind. Fire the car up and turn the a/c on and see if you have 12 volts going to the compressor, if you do you need a compressor, if not then I suggest you get a wiring schematic and fault trace it to the point where you do have current.
