Automatic Transmission V70-XC70

When checking the new transmissions (2003 XC and 2004 V70) for fluid level do the old guidelines apply (ie. engine running and fluid hot)??
With the car cold and not running I pulled the dip stick to check the access and noted the stick now just has COLD and HOT levels.
