The 850 is notorious for having leaking evaporators. The problem is not the cost of the evaporator, but the labor to replace it. The entire dash needs to come off, and that is 10-12 hours of labor.
The noise you hear is the compressor clutch engaging/releasing. Your coolant is probably low by about 1 can of R124a. You can buy a can and add it yourself.
