First, I'm glad your daughter is OK.

Some of the Volvo safety legend is real, some of it's Volvo Kool-Aid. You can look up the "real world" numbers at:

Volvos aren't bad of course, but they certainly won't guarantee eternal life. Small Volvos like the S40 don't perform any better in real world crashes than many other small cars.

You can do a lot with engineering but it's hard to beat Physics 101. Buy her a medium-sized or large Volvo or Volvo SUV to replace the 850.
