Occasional slow start, just threw code 315, Evap 850 1995

Hello Klaus. Thank you for your response. I had a family issue, and I have not been able to get back (and find your response) until now.

The code keeps coming back now, so I guess it is time to fix it. The slow start is worse than it ever was. Not horrible but not immediate. Also, FYI this happens each first start of the day, not when I fill up.

You have put an interesting spin on things. I have had a puff of smoke when starting pretty much since I bought the car. I don't burn oil, so I have been wondering about the puff.

I pulled the Evap purge valve out (BEFORE I read your post), and I can't get any air flow through it. My brief research into the Evap system yielded that the valve SHOULD be closed when the engine is cold. If it gets blocked open by charcoal, dirt, it lets fuel vapor into the intake manifold and something like flooding occurs. So I am leaning a bit away from the valve, but I may off base about the evap operation. For example, if there was a clog somewhere, or the valve was stuck closed, it doesn't sound like it would cause this problem.

So, my first reaction was to come here and finally find your response. I also found a step by step procedure in the archives for debugging the purge valve, but I will follow your advice to look at the regulator as well. The purge valve is a whopping $132, so I'd rather be sure I need it before buying. I just found this in the archives: http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=742009 and will try this procedure.

If you (or anyone else) has a comment on what I have found so far, please comment. Thanks again Klaus. Don '95 854T 182K
